The Tin Cup Open is an outing that not only raises money for the Early Intervention Program of Outagamie and Winnebago Counties, or "Birth to 3 Program," but is a 9 hole tournament to determine who the best golfer with a 7 iron is.
Why a 7 iron? The idea comes from the film "Tin Cup" starring Kevin Costner as "Tin Cup" Roy McAvoy, who is trying to qualify for the US Open. During a minor meltdown with his caddy, he breaks all of his clubs, except his 7 iron, saying “But then there’s the 7 iron. I never miss with the 7 iron. It’s the only truly safe club in my bag.” He then goes on to tie the course record only using this one club.
We keep this scene living on, but not to qualify for any major event, but to raise money for a program that helps out so many children in the Fox Cities area.
